I hope everyone enjoyed their (hopefully) long weekend! My husband worked all weekend, so it was super long for him, but not in the right way. A was originally coming in this weekend, but she was detained since the barn hand who does the weekends wasn’t able to come to work. We were supposed to do a fair amount of riding, so that wouldn’t have happened either way. Holy rain.
I spent a lot of time with my mom this weekend. My stepbrother is moving up from Florida to move into my old bedroom in her basement, so I’ve been moving stuff from her house to my house. My poor house is stuffed to the gills now. Thank goodness my mother in law hasn’t forced us to clean out Jason’s childhood bedroom. Between the one I had at Dad’s that I’ve been gradually cleaning out and the one I just evacuated at Mom’s, I don’t know what to do with all the things. I did find all of my writing from college at Mom’s. That should prove interesting to go through. I also brought my bookshelf with all my books (and Breyers!) from her house. I didn’t take a picture of it set up in the guest room, but the Breyer horses seem to overwhelm the amount of books. I’ve got things kind of backwards. I have all of my horse books on a shelf downstairs in the living room, and all of my non-horse books upstairs surrounded by horses. Oh well.
I also spent some quality time with the best dogs ever. I took Sampson to the vet on Friday to get all of his vaccinations updated and to get my vet’s opinion on his wonky toenails. He pulled two off and left the quicks exposed. He’s been licking them kind of obsessively, but my vet says to just leave them alone and let them grow out on their own.
On Saturday I went to the barn and put Kricket out with Copper so that he’d have a buddy when the fireworks started. Paige was beyond distraught that I put Kricket out with her man. Or that’s my theory because we all know Kricket and Paige aren’t attached to each other. Whenever Copper is turned out with the mares, Paige won’t let Kricket near him, so I imagine her inability to limit access to Copper was what stirred her up. I was on the phone with A at the time and didn’t get any media, which is sad, because I’m not sure I’ve ever seen her so fired up. The potato mare is much more athletic than she leads us to believe. She was pinning her ears and flat out running the fence line, switching leads at random. Meanwhile Robin was trotting around without much motivation. Red mare brain says “I’m the leader. I saw nothing spook worthy. Why are we running around? I’ll just trot until I see this monster.” Robin clearly doesn’t understand running out of anger/passion like Paige does. Robin=fear based running only. She did buck a couple of times for good measure though. The donkeys were running gleefully because they like any excuse to run with the horses.
Meanwhile back at the house the town fireworks were scheduled to start at 945. I managed to get home in time to feed the dogs and let them out to potty before the scary noises started. Sampson already has a procedure for scary things, so he was wrapped in his thundershirt and hiding behind the recliner as he will be all week if the weather forecast is correct. Ariel barked at the fireworks a little, but otherwise, she just laid on the couch with me and was scared. She did try to be brave and watched them a couple times, but they proved too scary, so she’d growl at them and lay back down.
Overall it was a pretty good weekend. R and L came over last night and cooked dinner. R likes to cook and makes good vegetarian food. We had a nice lasagna dish last night with lots of mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, etc. The only thing I would’ve done differently is add more tomatoes. Because nom. Tomatoes.
Also, Paige has an ultrasound tonight. Cross your fingers that she’s pregnant!
