FBP Blog Hop: Top 5 Horse Show Essentials

Since I really have next to nothing going on horse wise, I welcome the opportunity for a blog hop. Jason and I did configure the barn for winter yesterday mostly. I’ll post more on that once I have media.

So Amanda at the $900 FB Pony asked us what our top 5 show essentials are. Without further ado:

  1. Cash dollars. I hate writing checks. I hate not having monies for food (not that horse show food and horse showing go hand in hand at all. Greasy food + nerves, right? Eek.)
  2. My favorite Santa Fe spray. I know, I’ve talked about this wizardry already, but for real, if I’m going to comb through a tail, this stuff is required.

Here, have a random picture of A on another halter bred turned hunter Appaloosa from a day I groomed/photographed/helped her maintain her sanity. 🙂

  3. Mounting block. Both times I showed last year (once with average height Paige, once with tall Copper) I didn’t have a mounting block. It annoyed me when I was getting on Paige because my show shirt didn’t fit ideally and every time I mounted, it came untucked. Luckily she stood reliably while I retucked it. I regretted it more when I had to mount Copper what felt like 11 times in the heat in September last year. Every time I mounted my energy was more depleted than the last and Copper’s 16.2 frame seemed that much bigger because of the heat/lack of energy. I won’t do that again.

Copper and I were both ready to nap.

  4. Someone to take pictures. This feels shallow for some reason, but when I show, I want documentation of my performance. Video would be awesome too, but pictures are necessary. Luckily I generally have a friend or my mom at the show, so I end up with something.
  5. I figure most of the “horse related” stuff is a given here, so I didn’t say anything about tack, etc. But hay net. The hay net is for me as much as the horse. There’s not a lot that is more unnerving for me than being ringside and hearing Copper’s shrill whinny across the showgrounds when he’s realized that he’s alone. *Gasp* Hay is a great distraction for the anxious pony.

I miss this at horse shows the most. ❤ Dad holding a wild three year old Copper.
